Question: How can the U.S. National Vegetation Classification (USNVC) serve as an effective tool for classifying and mapping vegetation, and inform assessments and monitoring? Location: Voyageurs National Park, northern Minnesota, U.S.A and environs. The park contains 54 243 ha of terrestrial habitat in the sub-boreal region of North America. Methods: We classified and mapped the natural vegetation using the USNVC, with ‘alliance’and ‘association’as base units. We compiled 259 classification plots and 1251 accuracy assessment test plots. Both plot and type ordinations were used to analyse vegetation and environmental patterns. Color infrared aerial photography (1:15840 scale) was used for mapping. Polygons were manually drawn, then transferred into digital form. Classification and mapping products are stored in publicly available databases. Past fire and logging events were used to assess distribution of forest types. Results and Discussion: Ordination and cluster analyses confirmed 49 associations and 42 alliances, with three associations ranked as globally vulnerable to extirpation. Ordination provided a useful summary of vegetation and ecological gradients. Overall map accuracy was 82.4%. Pinus banksiana - Picea mariana forests were less frequent in areas unburned since the 1930s. Conclusion: The USNVC provides a consistent ecological tool for summarizing and mapping vegetation. The products provide a baseline for assessing forests and wetlands, including fire management. The standardized classification and map units provide local to continental perspectives on park resources through linkages to state, provincial, and national classifications in the U.S. and Canada, and to NatureServe's Ecological Systems classification. 相似文献
Effects of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning have been mainly studied in experiments that artificially create gradients in grassland plant diversity. Woody species were largely excluded from these early experiments, despite the ecological and socioeconomic importance of forest ecosystems. We discuss conceptual aspects of mechanistically driven research on the biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationship in forests, including the comparison of scientific approaches like ‘observational studies’, ‘removal experiments’, and ‘synthetic-assemblage experiments’. We give a short overview on the differences between herbaceous and forest ecosystems, focusing on canopy characteristics, and the possibilities for individual versus population-based investigations. We present detailed information about the first large-scale, multisite and long-term biodiversity–ecosystem functioning experiment with tree species of temperate forests (BIOTREE – BIOdiversity and ecosystem processes in experimental TREE stands). At three sites of differing geology and local climate, we planted 200,000 saplings on a total area of 70 ha. At two sites, diversity gradients were established by varying the number of tree species (BIOTREE-SPECIES). At a third site, only functional diversity at a constant level of tree species richness was manipulated by selecting mixtures that differ in the functional trait values of the corresponding species (BIOTREE-FD). Additional experimental treatments at the subplot level include silvicultural management options, the addition of subdominant species, and the reduction of genetic diversity. Response variables focus on productivity, biogeochemical cycles and carbon sequestration, and resource use complementarity. We explore the use of different measures of functional diversity for a posteriori classifications of functional richness and their use in the analysis of our tree diversity experiment. The experiment is thought to provide a long-term research platform for a variety of scientific questions related to forest biodiversity and ecosystem processes. 相似文献
Tolerance to +G(z) gravitational stress is reduced when +G(z) stress is preceded by exposure to hypogravity (fraction, 0, or negative G(z)). For example, there is an exaggerated fall in eye-level arterial pressure (ELAP) early on during +G(z) stress (head-up tilt; HUT) when this stress is immediately preceded by -G(z) stress (head-down tilt; HDT). The aims of the present study were to characterize the hemodynamic consequences of brief HDT on subsequent HUT and to test the hypothesis that an elevation in leg vascular conductance induced by -G(z) stress contributes to the exaggerated fall in ELAP. Young healthy subjects (n = 3 men and 4 women) were subjected to 30 s of 30 degrees HUT from a horizontal position and to 30 s of 30 degrees HUT when HUT was immediately preceded by 20 s of -15 degrees HDT. Four bouts of HDT-HUT were alternated between five bouts of HUT in a counterbalanced designed to minimize possible time effects of repeated exposure to gravitational stress. One minute was allowed for recovery between tilts. Brief exposure to HDT elicited an exaggerated fall in ELAP during the first seconds of the subsequent HUT (-17.9 +/- 1.4 mmHg) compared with HUT alone (-12.4 +/- 1.2 mmHg, P <0.05) despite a greater rise in stroke volume (Doppler ultrasound) and cardiac output over this brief time period in the HDT-HUT trials compared with the HUT trials (thereafter stroke volume fell under both conditions). The greater fall in ELAP was associated with an exaggerated increase in leg blood flow (femoral artery Doppler ultrasound) and was therefore largely (70%) attributable to an exaggerated rise in estimated leg vascular conductance, confirming our hypotheses. Thus brief exposure to -G(z) stress leads to an exaggerated fall in ELAP during subsequent HUT, owing to an exaggerated increase in estimated leg vascular conductance. 相似文献
The photoinduced linear dichroism of absorption changes resulting from photolysis of the complex between heme a3 of the cytochrome oxidase and CO is studied. The experiments started from isotropic solutions or suspensions of the enzyme both in its isolated form and in mitochondria. The anisotropy responsible for the linear dichroism was induced by excitation with a flash of linearly polarized light. The dichroic ratios observed with various systems; polymerized enzyme in solution, enzyme in mitochondria and in submitochondrial particles (at 20 °C as well as at liquid N2-temperature) all approached a value of 4/3 which characterizes a chromophore which is circularly degenerate. Therefrom we conclude that the interaction of heme a3 with its microenvironment within the protein does not break its four-fold symmetry.
The experiments with mitochondria and submitochondrial particles suspended in aqueous buffer revealed similarly high dichroic ratios without any dichroic relaxation other than a rather slow one which could be attributed to the rotation of the whole organelle in the suspending medium. Therefrom we conclude that the cytochrome oxidase either is totally immobilized in the membrane, or that it carries out only limited rotational diffusion around a single axis coinciding with the symmetry axis of heme a3. In the light of independent evidence for a transmembrane arrangement of the oxidase and for the general fluidity of the inner mitochondrial membrane we consider anisotropic mobility of the cytochrome oxidase around an axis normal to the plane of the membrane as the most likely interpretation. Then our experimental results imply that the plane of heme a3 is coplanar to the membrane. 相似文献
Submandibular secretions collected from children with cystic fibrosis (CF) showed increased protein concentration (milligrams/milliliter) and increased amylase specific activity (units/milligram of protein) relative to normal secretions. These differences between normal (N) and CF secretions were as follows: protein, 1.25 ± 0.51 (N), 1.75 ± 0.35 (CF) (P < 0.02); and amylase, 58 ± 18 (N), 80 ± 19 (CF) (P < 0.001). To determine the basis for elevated protein in CF saliva, several major proteins resolved by polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis were quantitated by densitometry. These included four phosphoproteins (PP), serum albumin, an acid phosphatase-containing fraction, amylase, and an unidentified protein referred to as PI-7.1. Together, these proteins comprise greater than 75% of the total protein in the secretion. Differences in individual protein concentrations (milligrams/milliliter) resolved from normal and CF secretions, respectively, were as follows: PP2, 0.02 ± 0.01, 0.03 ± 0.02 (NS, not significant); PP3, 0.06 ± 0.04, 0.05 ± 0.03 (NS); acid phosphatase fraction, 0.06 ± 0.04, 0.12 ± 0.07 (P < 0.05); amylase, 0.09 ± 0.04, 0.27 ± 0.16 (P < 0.01); and pI-7.1, 0.04 ± 0.02, 0.13 ± 0.08 (P < 0.02). Amylase, the most significant contributor to the elevated protein, comprised 26% of the total protein of normal secretions and 38% of the total protein of CF secretions. Thus, our results do not support the concept of a generalized increase in all organic components in CF submandibular secretions but, rather, increases in specific proteins, namely amylase, component pI-7.1, and an acid phosphatase-containing fraction. 相似文献
The differentiation of the spermatids of Bufo arenarum has been described from a study of electron micrographs of thin sections of testis. The development of the acrosome from the Golgi complex takes place in much the same manner as in mammalian spermatogenesis but no acrosome granule is formed. A perforatorium is described for the first time in this species. It is formed by a convergence of dense filaments that arise between the nuclear membrane and the head cap. During maturation of the spermatid the chromatin undergoes striking physicochemical alterations. Fine chromatin granules uniformly dispersed in the karyoplasm are replaced by larger and larger aggregates and these ultimately coalesce to form a very dense sperm head. Two centrioles of cylindrical form are situated very near the base of the sperm head. The longitudinal fibrils of the tail flagellum take origin from one, and the dense fibrous substance of the undulating membrane is closely related to the other. Phase contrast cinematographic observations on the swimming movements of living toad sperm, when considered in relation to the fine structural components of the tail, suggest that there is a contractile component in the undulating membrane as well as in the axial fibrils. The differences in the structure of mammalian and amphibian sperm tails are discussed in relation to differences in the character of their movements. 相似文献
